Very good book After a couple months of relative quiet things are heating up at the ranch again Catherine is pregnant by a man who only wanted her for her inheritance so she broke it off with him Now she s a doubly attractive target for kidnapping and ransom Stepping up to protect her is Gray As teenagers they were in love with each other until Gray left the ranch without even saying goodbye Though he s been back for several years they avoid each other whenever possible Gray can t stand t Very good book After a couple months of relative quiet things are heating up at the ranch again Catherine is pregnant by a man who only wanted her for her inheritance so she broke it off with him Now she s a doubly attractive target for kidnapping and ransom Stepping up to protect her is Gray As teenagers they were in love with each other until Gray left the ranch without even saying goodbye Though he s been back for several years they avoid each other whenever possible Gray can t stand the idea of Catherine being in danger and decides that marrying her would make it possible for him to be with her 24 7 Neither expects their old feelings to resurface.Catherine had been heartbroken when Gray left without telling her why She has moved on with her life, and tells herself that she no longer has feelings for him But when he is the one who rescues her from the first kidnapping attempt she discovers that maybe those old feelings aren t dead after all She tries to ignore the danger, but after another attempt she realizes that it is real She doesn t want to endanger her pregnancy so when Gray suggests a temporary marriage so that he can better protect her she says yes She doesn t expect to start seeingof the boy she fell in love with in the man he has become She tries to remind herself that the marriage is only temporary, that when the danger is gone Gray will be also, but she still finds herself dreaming about making it real I loved seeing the way that they worked together, from the ranch chores they did to their investigation into Dylan s background for him All of it brought them closer together.Gray is a great guy who has a few insecurities when it comes to Catherine He had loved her as a teen, but after hearing part of a conversation thought that she didn t care the same way Added to his father s assertion that a Colton would never marry a mere ranch hand, Gray decided he needed to leave the ranch Several years later he returned to take his father s place as foreman, but did his best to avoid Catherine When he rescues her from a kidnapping attempt he is reminded of the way he used to feel about her He can t bear the idea of something happening to her so he makes it his job to keep her safe When another attempt is made from inside the house he suggests that they marry as a way for him to stay by her side It doesn t take long for him to realize the downside of all that togetherness his feelings for her are growing again He still feels that there is no future for them and tries to keep his distance, but it is a losing battle I was really rooting for him to finally try to fight for her and tell her how he really felt. The mystery of who is behind the troubles on the ranch is ongoing There is a glimpse at the end of the person who may be behind it, but they are masked so it s just an impression My one guess may have already been eliminated, but there are still other options Dylan also asked Gray and Catherine to help him find out the truth behind who he is Some of his murdered in the first book mother s information has been called into question and he needs to know the truth Some of the things they find out create evenquestions Hopefully those will be answered in the next book, which is Dylan s story

A marriage will allow me to sleep in your suite, and I ll go with you wherever you need to go and you go with me when I do chores or whatever It s the only way to assure you and your baby are safe is based on a REALLY flimsy premise.Namely, that the hero and heroine have to get married so that the heroine will have round the clock protection. The heroine is rich Ever hear of a bodyguard Even if you wanted the hero to be your bodyguard, that would be fine You have absolutely NO reason to marry him It s ludicrous. In case you haven t been following the Colton saga, Catherine Colton is 26 and a heir to the Colton fortune Her scumbag ex boyfriend, Dirk, left her when he found out that she wouldn t inherit until she s thirty He also left her unknowingly pregnant.Gray is Catherine s true love He was her first boyfriend and her first sex But he ran away and abandoned her when he was 18 and she was 17 because he got it in his head that he wasn t good enough for her or she d never marry a poor ranch hand or some shit He spends five years in ZERO contact with her Also, actively hating her Yes, hating her, even though he has no reason to hate her and HE is the one who hurt HER by leaving with no explanation in the middle of the night and then not contacting her for five years After being her boyfriend for a year and a half What a piece of shit But he HATES her and walks around thinking hateful thoughts about her, something about her being stuck up and rich and never really loving him THEN, he returns to the ranch after a five year absence when his father dies and takes over as head ranch guy, or whatever And he then spends FOUR YEARS working on the ranch, but avoiding speaking to her if at all possible, and still harboring these hateful thoughts about Catherine Something something if she really loved me she would have never ever dated another man in the five years I was gone, something something Bullshit like that.Meanwhile, Catherine is a sweet, optimistic, kindhearted animal lover who is sad and upset anytime she sees thinks about the man who is living and working on her land and completely broke her heart and stomped all over it for no reason.ANYWAY When Catherine is pregnant with Dirk s child, there s a target on her back because kidnapper s could get her, a Colton heir, and the baby, a future Colton heir, as well. That s when Gray comes up with his stupid idea of I have to marry you to protect you Let s talk about the good and bad in this story.THE BAD 1 This stupid I have to marry you for your own protection plot This would be fine in a historical, I would buy it in a historical Here, in a contemporary setting, it makes no sense No sense She s already pregnant by another man, I d hardly think anyone would blink an eye if she hired a bodyguard and that bodyguard had to GASP sleep in her suite Even if she wanted to hire Gray himself, because she can t trust anyone else, I still don t see what the problem would be Or where the necessity for marriage comes from.It s bullshit.2 Gray is really fucked up in the head about Catherine, and it s not attractive I have NO idea how he twisted this whole thing into being HER fault and nurses his hatred for her for nine long years He has NO reason to hate her and HE S the one who abandoned HER with no explanation. In fact, I m shocked that Catherine wants anything to do with him If I were her, not only would I not be sexually romantically interested in him but I would NOT allow him to work on my father s ranch I d never want to see his face again What a piece of shit The idea that she gives this fucker a second chance is unbelievable It s beyond belief Being in Gray s head and hearing his ugly thoughts about this perfectly lovely woman is not pleasant It certainly doesn t make me cheer when they end up together How he can think those things about her and then expect me to be all lovey dovey when they end up together is beyond my understanding.Eventually he understands that he was a piece of shit, but too little, too late in my opinion I can t believe she takes him back after nine years of him being a jackass.3 Gray does daddy stuff with her like tells her to stop playing with her hair all the time, occasionally grabbing her hand so she can t play with it it s a nervous tic and he also does this thing where he touches her on the nose cutely I m like, She s not a fucking child Seriously, dude, she s not your kid She can play with her hair if she wants to, and I wish you wouldn t boop her on the nose like she s your daughter It might be cute for some people, but for me both these things scream daddy and not lover to me I would be extremely annoyed if I were her.4 Catherine has spent her whole life dreaming of being a wife and mother, to the point where she has no other ambitions That itself is okay However, because this piece of shit decides they must be married for her own protection, poor Catherine has to have a piss poor, quickie ranch wedding with NO frills and no dress and all her wedding dreams are totally negated. This might be fine for someone else, but for Catherine, whom we already feel sorry for because she got knocked up by a lowlife, to see her have to throw all her wedding dreams in the trash is a big deal.I thought maybe they d resolve this at the end, like give her a second wedding or something But nope, she just is going to have to live with her quickie wedding in the backyard, I guess.AGAIN, NOTHING is wrong with quickie wedding in the backyard if that is what you want Here, for this heroine, I can t help but see it as a tragedy and just onething she has to give up because of the shit men in her life.THE GOOD I liked the talk about scents He smelled her long before he saw her Ranch foreman Gray Stark had a history with that distinctive fragrance of exotic spices and mysterious flowers Catherine Colton had worn it for the year and a half he d loved her, for the five years that he d hated her and now for the past four years of his cold indifference toward her. They also talk about Gray s scent It was bad enough that she couldn t get the scent of him out of her head and that he d invaded her sleep all night long.He d stood so close to her when he d encountered her outside of her father s suite that she d been able to feel his body heat radiating toward her, smelled the scent of fresh minty soap and shaving cream and a hint of woodsy cologne that was so familiar She d read somewhere that scents easily pulled up specific people and places from memory, and she knew it was true Gray s scent had brought up times in the past that she d prefer she never remember.NEUTRAL This could be considered bad or good depending on who you are Catherine never tells Dirk that he is the father of her child Normally, I consider people who hide paternity to be scum However, Dirk is scum and I can t imagine him bringing anything good to the child as a father figure Gray is going to raise the child as his own This might really bother some people, other people might strongly feel it is the best decision I m going to put it in the neutral section and let y all make your own decisions HOW S THE SEX, CARMEN Actually, it was pretty good I didn t find it sexually exciting by that I mean it s not a sex scene I m going to read and re read or one that made me melt personally but Gray is good in bed and didn t do anything objectionable He actually scored some points with me by doing foreplay, giving her an orgasm with his fingers before he gives her one with his penis, and also he doesn t demand she go down on him All good things and overall the sex scene was pleasant and satisfying to this reader.I don t think this makes up for the hero s general behavior, but at least it was a bright spot in the book.Tl dr I just couldn t get behind the hate filled hero in this one I kept expecting them to have a big reveal on why he hated her, some bad thing she did in her past But no, nothing So I can t help but think the hero is a shitheel Combined with the LUDICROUS I have to marry you, it s the only way plot, this was just TOO much for me.Cassidy isn t a bad author, this wasn t badly written technically, but with these problems I couldn t enjoy myself

Carla Cassidy is an auto buy for me but these series with many authors tend to not be my faves Too much time spent on backstory for me Not to mention the how many secondary characters I was told about that I was trying to keep straight This one was just okay The h was bugging me because she starting to overdo it from the second she found out she was pregnant Like picking names, planning the color scheme for a nursery, rubbing her stomach nonstop kind of stuff I get that excitement but usua Carla Cassidy is an auto buy for me but these series with many authors tend to not be my faves Too much time spent on backstory for me Not to mention the how many secondary characters I was told about that I was trying to keep straight This one was just okay The h was bugging me because she starting to overdo it from the second she found out she was pregnant Like picking names, planning the color scheme for a nursery, rubbing her stomach nonstop kind of stuff I get that excitement but usually you wait to make sure you are past the safe mark confirmed with a doctor etc and not in the middle of several murders, attacks and whatnot before you get too in to it I also kept thinking, why are there any employees left working here They are being murdered I kept thinking they were like the characters in the scary movies that go out alone at dark knowing Freddy Kruger or Jason or Michael Meyers is on the loose

Not a stand alone, referred to much to previous books Had it read book 3 first so this wouldn t be so confusing Once I did, however, I was able to enjoy this liked the hero and not quite as much the heroine Unlike book 3 which resolved it s plot, this left too much hanging That being said, I can t wait to read book 4 and learningabout Dylan.
