WowI really enjoyed this book a lot so much I am butting this in my library to keep. This is a book you just can t put down I liked a lot I hope you do too. The cover of this book looks very sinister and even a little intimidating but it s actually a little on the sweet side The Almshouse centers on a twelve year old girl named Julia and her life as a ghost I wasn t really expecting that but I m glad I stuck with the story because it becameandinteresting with every page I turned Julia passes away and awakens in a new realm, one ruled by spirits who are kind of stuck in between death and the afterlife They aren t alive but they have The cover of this book looks very sinister and even a little intimidating but it s actually a little on the sweet side The Almshouse centers on a twelve year old girl named Julia and her life as a ghost I wasn t really expecting that but I m glad I stuck with the story because it becameandinteresting with every page I turned Julia passes away and awakens in a new realm, one ruled by spirits who are kind of stuck in between death and the afterlife They aren t alive but they haven t passed on to heaven or been taken away by the Grim Reapers That was a surprising aspect of the book that made it a little dark but in a way that definitely addedbody to the story Reapers are something you don t see in every other supernatural story so I was pleasantly surprised by their appearance here The mystery in the book is this house that keeps burning down and taking the families inside with it Because she s now a spirit, Julia is free to roam within the house visiting the lost souls who d lived there before She attempts to solve the mystery of the house but is met with obstacles she must overcome along the way I like to think of this as a PG version of American Horror Story. The characters in this book were very well developed, especially Julia She was sweet and played her role well as both the protagonist and narrator Although she was only twelve, she had a very mature voice and I had no complaints following her throughout the book I m not usually a fan of books about younger characters but I m definitely glad I agreed to read this piece King is a great writer and I look forward to readingfrom this author 4 stars for a few too many errors but this still stands as a book I would highly recommend to readers of all ages and interests The Almshouse is sweet, Julia grows and develops very much throughout the story but there is definitely a dark side here Other than the Reapers, much of the story takes place in this spirit realm and deals with a good amount of death If you like dark fiction, then this book will interest you I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review Julia s story beguiled me I had to keep reading This haunting and original novel layers its thoughtful and surprising world building with character development and a thread of mystery This is a coming of age novel with a difference Unusual it might be, but it is gently respectful of a young woman s emotional journey Lovely. I was given a copy of this adorable story in exchange for an honest review Julia, a 12 year old girl dies in her sleep while away at school, and finds herself in a society of spirits who have not quite made it to either heaven or to be snatched by the grim reaper This is really a sweet story, written as almost a fairy tale, but with ghosts instead of princesses and fairies This is a book that would really appeal to young readers Although our star is a ghost, it is still a coming of age type I was given a copy of this adorable story in exchange for an honest review Julia, a 12 year old girl dies in her sleep while away at school, and finds herself in a society of spirits who have not quite made it to either heaven or to be snatched by the grim reaper This is really a sweet story, written as almost a fairy tale, but with ghosts instead of princesses and fairies This is a book that would really appeal to young readers Although our star is a ghost, it is still a coming of age type story, with Julia learning about love, right and wrong and loyalty I really enjoyed reading this, and enjoyed the various quirky characters My problems with it are some of the grammatical typo errors, that could be cleared up easily with editing But I also had a problem with some storyline issues that I felt should have been better defined rather than just glanced over But maybe being written as a fairy tale type story some explanations and details were purposely omitted I think a professional editor could polish this up into a real 5 star classic now i am hooked This was such a great, easy and creative book i was hooked after the first page The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.i would highly recommend this author and this book.
